LPRC DEDICATES MODERN LABORATORY AND TANK 12, BREAKS GROUND FOR US$35 MILLION STORAGE TERMINAL EXPANSION
Monrovia, Liberia - October 26, 2026 -The Liberia Petroleum Refining Company (LPRC) has dedicated its Modern Petroleum Product Testing Laboratory and Tank 12, a 12,800-metric-ton Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) storage tank, and broken ground for a US$35 million Product Storage Terminal Expansion and Modernization Project.
The ceremonies, held at LPRC’s Product Storage Terminal on Bushrod Island, brought together President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, government officials, lawmakers, petroleum importers, industry stakeholders, and other distinguished guests.
Delivering the keynote address, President Boakai emphasized that reliable petroleum supplies are essential to Liberia’s economic growth, national energy security, and long-term development. He noted that the new facilities represent important investments in petroleum quality assurance, consumer protection, and the country’s capacity to maintain a steady supply of petroleum products.
President Boakai disclosed that the US$35 million expansion project will add 50,000 metric tons of petroleum storage capacity and introduce modern automated systems, improved operational infrastructure, enhanced safety facilities, and Liberia’s first petroleum marine back-loading capability.
As part of the expansion, the project will also involve the reclamation of approximately 15 to 20 meters of land from the sea, including the area designated for the construction of the new tank farm. A coastal defense barrier will be constructed to protect the terminal by providing a physical barrier against the sea. This infrastructure is expected to strengthen the terminal’s protection and support the safe and sustainable development of the expanded storage facilities.
Upon completion, the project is expected to increase LPRC’s share of Liberia’s total petroleum storage capacity from approximately 29 percent to 50 percent.
The President urged LPRC’s Board and Management to ensure proper maintenance of the facilities and the transparent, accountable, and responsible implementation of the expansion project. He also commended Managing Director Hon. Amos B. Tweh, the Board of Directors, Management, and employees for their contributions to the Company’s progress.
Meanwhile, Hon. Musa Hassan Bility, Political Leader of the Citizens Movement for Change (CMC) and Chief Executive Officer of SRIMEX Oil and Gas, commended the LPRC leadership and the government for restoring confidence among petroleum importers and suppliers who store products at the Company’s terminals.
Bility credited the leadership of Managing Director Hon. Amos B. Tweh with improving confidence in the safety and accountability of petroleum products stored at LPRC, describing the progress as an important step toward strengthening trust within the petroleum sector.
The newly dedicated Petroleum Product Testing Laboratory is expected to enhance LPRC’s ability to test and verify petroleum products entering the Liberian market, strengthen quality control, and support compliance with applicable standards.
Tank 12, with a storage capacity of 12,800 metric tons of PMS, further expands the Company’s petroleum storage infrastructure and strengthens its ability to support a reliable supply of fuel across Liberia.
The groundbreaking for the US$35 million Product Storage Terminal Expansion and Modernization Project marks another significant milestone in LPRC’s efforts to modernize its operations and meet the country’s growing petroleum storage needs. Beyond increasing storage capacity, the project is expected to create employment opportunities, develop technical skills, and expand opportunities for qualified Liberian workers and businesses.
For his part, LPRC Managing Director Hon. Amos B. Tweh reaffirmed the Company’s commitment to strengthening petroleum storage capacity, improving product quality assurance, and supporting a reliable supply of petroleum products to the Liberian market.
He noted that the new laboratory and expanded storage infrastructure reflect LPRC’s commitment to building a stronger, safer, and more efficient petroleum sector in the interest of the Liberian people.
The dedication and groundbreaking ceremonies underscore LPRC’s continued commitment to infrastructure development, petroleum quality assurance, and national energy security. These investments are expected to strengthen Liberia’s petroleum supply chain, improve operational efficiency, and contribute to sustainable economic growth.
